Dear Professor Doglas Cesar Lucas,

Thank you for the update. Could you please, however, confirm that the statement of copyright on the first page of the manuscript will be included in the article that will be downloadable through your website before proceeding with the publication process.

As I currently don’t have institutional affiliation, no author title or affiliation is necessary in the article. If some academic information and email address are required, you may use the following:

Doctor of Social Sciences (University of Lapland), Master of Science in Politics of the World Economy (The London School of Economics and Political Science), International Bachelor of Business Administration Program (The Helsinki School of Economics and Business Administration, currently Aalto University School of Business). tero.auvinen@openmailbox.org

When is the next issue of Direito em Debate after your July 2017 issue – apparently v. 26, n. 48 (2017) where the second article could be included – published?

Kind regards,
Tero

Dear Editors,

According to your email dated April 4, 2017, “the JSS only publishes original articles that have not been published elsewhere either electronically or in printed” and you will “not consider” an article that is “available on the internet”. I am still waiting for your confirmation that any potential submission could be published with the statement of copyright mentioned in my email dated May 5, 2017 and information on the length of the entire review and publication process before making a potential submission.

Kind regards,
Tero Auvinen

  1. and 3. Tribuna Juridică and ADJURIS

[The final version of “On Legitimate Sovereignty” that I was asked to approve for publication after the April 2017 issue of Tribuna Juridică should already have been published is available here: 21 Auvinen

In the final version the copyright no longer appears to belong to the author: “Copyright © 2017 Tero Auvinen” has been removed from the manuscript.  Journal of Alternative Perspectives in the Social Sciences removed the author’s copyright (“Copyright © 2016 Tero Auvinen”) from both manuscripts published in their 2016 8(2) issue without asking the author’s approval.

For Beyond Legality, see the following email dated February 15, 2017, according to which “The e-book in PDF format will appear in a maximum of 1 month from the signing of a publication agreement.” This implies that the book has already been accepted for publication. If there still was a review process to be completed with potential changes required and the possibility of the manuscript being rejected, it would not be possible to offer a publication agreement for signing with a guarantee to publish the e-book within one month after the agreement would have been signed.]

Dear Professor Auvinen,

We are pleased to accept the revised version of your paper, “THE CORE-PERIPHERY STRUCTURE OF MONEY AND THE MICROFOUNDATIONS OF WORLD-SYSTEMS RESEARCH” for publication in the JWSR.  You have either made the requisite changes or satisfactorily addressed the critiques made by the reviewers and by me.  Yet, I would ask that you shed the paper of “flying spaghetti monster cult,” which, while quite humorous, could be replaced by a better descriptive!

Congratulations, and please note that in just a few places we will need to make a few modest revisions to conform with grammatical standards.

Sincerely,
Ed Kick, Co-editor

From many journals/publishers there has been no response to repeated questions on copyright, while some have either refused to consider author-defined statements of copyright or rejected actual or potential submissions potentially contrary to their own stated policies. Below is a copy of some of my correspondence with, for instance, Ancilla Iuris (www.anci.ch) regarding the potential publication of Beyond Legality. There has been no response to the email dated January 13, 2017, which was resent on January 20, 2017.

Dear Andreas Abegg,

Thank you for your email.

Any potential difficulties to connect the arguments “to the present scientific contributions in the fields of legal theory in continental Europe” despite of more than 40 continental European references in the document may well imply deficiencies on the part of “the present scientific contributions in the fields of legal theory in continental Europe” which the submission might remedy. The reviewers might be expected precisely to question the quality of the submission: to show, for instance, that the submission lacks relevance in relation to “law and society” or “interdisciplinary approach […] bring[ing] together law with its neighboring disciplines such as Political Sciences, Economics, Sociology, Linguistics, Philosophy, History, Art, Psychology etc.” (http://www.anci.ch/about_ancilla_iuris), includes significant and irremediable substantive errors or lacks sufficient novelty (which, based on the reviewers’ apparent difficulties to connect the submission “to the present scientific contributions in the fields of legal theory in continental Europe”, might not be expected to be the case). As a journal aiming to “bring together law with its neighboring disciplines such as Political Sciences, Economics, Sociology, Linguistics, Philosophy, History, Art, Psychology etc.”, it would be your task to find qualified and impartial reviewers in all potentially relevant fields. Even in the narrowly defined field of law, submissions focusing on, for instance, the nature or feasibility of law as a distinct academic discipline or professional field might well be expected to connect to contributions in several different countries in several different disciplinary fields in order to attain a sufficiently high level of quality even for continental European readers who might have no prior exposure to other academic disciplines or professional fields or countries outside of continental Europe.

May I ask you to send the submission to qualified and impartial reviewers in all potentially relevant fields to assess the quality and relevance of the submission in respect of each reviewer’s field of specialization and law? Such reviewers might, by definition, be expected to have a significant publication record in fields and topics similar to my submission. In case you either cannot find such reviewers or the reviewers cannot question the quality of the submission in fields in which they respectively have extensive publication records, would potentially the only appropriate course of action for Ancilla Iuris not be to publish the submission?

Kind regards,
Tero Auvinen

Dear Tero Auvinen

The two reviewers have stopped the reviewing process after a first thorough read of your book. Both found the arguments made very difficult to follow and even more difficult to connect to the present scientific contributions in the fields of legal theory in continental Europe. Mainly due to the latter, and without questioning the quality of your text, they are of the opinion that Ancilla Iuris is not the right place of publication for your article.

I hope that you will  find [sic, double space between “will” and “find”] another suitable place to publish.

Best regards,

I am glad to report that the ancilla iuris board has unanimously welcomed publication of articles in the size of books. We will now initiate the formal review process which involves two independent reviewer looking into your work. Depending on the size of your work, this might take approx. up to 4 weeks. Furthermore, due to the size of the task, we will offer the reviewers a small remuneration. We will pay this out of our ancilla iuris funds, but I would expect you to publish at ancilla iuris in case the reviews are favourable.
